Kumba Diocesan Annual Pilgrimage: A Journey of Sacrifice and Spiritual Growth

Friday, March 7th, 2023, marked a significant day in the Diocese of Kumba as it was designated for the annual pilgrimage to Saint Michael the Archangel Parish, Baseng. This pilgrimage, though spiritually enriching, posed unique challenges due to the rugged terrain, especially the daunting Loum -Tombel stretch.

This year’s pilgrimage held particular significance due to the deteriorating condition of the earth road to Baseng making it exceedingly difficult for buses to traverse the route. In contrast to previous years, when buses could navigate these paths, the poor road conditions forced a change in plans. The Diocesan pilgrimage was observed in different deaneries to accommodate these challenging circumstances.

Despite the obstacles, some determined pilgrims braved the odds from various deaneries, traveling to Baseng via bicycles, cars that could withstand the rough terrain, and even on foot. Their commitment to this spiritual journey highlighted the essence of sacrifice and the significance of bearing the cross.

The pilgrimage began with a warm atmosphere, setting the tone for spiritual preparation. Pilgrims engaged in personal prayer and received the sacrament of confession, preparing their hearts for the journey ahead. The Stations of the Cross, from downhill to the hilltop, mirrored the path to Calvary, emphasizing the role of sacrifice in the Christian journey.

The Holy Mass commenced at 10:20 AM, featuring heartfelt singing led by the dedicated deaneries. Bishop, in his sermon, described Baseng as a place where hunger for God’s mercy and love is satisfied. He emphasized the necessity of the cross, stating, “No cross, no Christianity; no cross, no salvation.” The bishop encouraged the pilgrims to seek God’s mercy through confession, highlighting the immeasurable love of God.

The bishop’s message resonated with the concept of the synodal journey towards God, emphasizing unity and solidarity on the path to heaven. He stressed the importance of supporting one another, urging pilgrims to journey together in faith.

Despite the challenges posed by the road conditions, the pilgrimage was spiritually enriching and demonstrated the unwavering commitment of the faithful in Kumba Diocese. The bishop expressed hope that, with God’s grace, the road conditions would improve, allowing more Christians to partake in this annual pilgrimage in the future.

The pilgrimage served as a reminder of the importance of sacrifice, the significance of the cross in Christianity, and the unity of the faithful on their journey of faith. As Christians continue their journey through the Lenten season, the lessons learned from the Kumba Diocesan pilgrimage will undoubtedly resonate in their hearts, drawing them closer to God and one another.
